Raul Martinez's life has been marked by a commitment to public service and a track record of accomplishments and successful leadership.

Raul migrated to the United States from Cuba in May of 1960. Martinez, a product of Miami-Dade County's public school system, graduated from Miami Senior High School and obtained his Bachelor in Science in Criminal Justice from Florida International University.

As a concerned and involved citizen, Raul has been the longest serving mayor in Hialeah, Florida's fifth largest municipality. Raul began his civic career as a member of Hialeah's Minority Housing Committee in 1971. He continued his public service as a member of the Personnel Board in 1977 and was afterward elected to the Hialeah City Council.

In 1981, Mr. Martinez was elected as mayor of Hialeah by an overwhelming margin and was subsequently elected to six terms. As Mayor, Raul set a progressive and successful agenda, which made the city one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state, earning it the nickname "La Ciudad del Progreso" (The City of Progress). Raul left behind a legacy of affordable housing for thousands of families and a thriving economy with unprecedented growth in small businesses.

Mayor Martinez's forward thinking prowess and leadership earned him the role of President of the Miami-Dade County and Florida League of Cities for over twenty years. In that capacity, Raul's knowledge and commitment to public service provided a thorough and proven road map for Florida's cities to flourish and prosper.

As Miami-Dade County's population grew and the need for a solid infrastructure was warranted, Raul served on the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), whose task is to ensure road improvements adequately meet the needs of South Floridians.

After decades of public service, Raul resides in Hialeah with his family and runs a successful public relations firm aimed at making government more efficient and with a specialty in leadership development and crisis management.
